“The House that Welcomes: A practical manual for librarians in Latin America for working with migrant populations”, has been published and launched through an online event hosted by The Centre for the Promotion of Books in Latin America and Caribbean (Cerlalc).
The digital Manual is the result of a collaboration between Evelyn Arizpe, Julie McAdam and Diana Cruz and Cerlalc, within their programme “Rutas de la palabra y la vida”, as a regional strategy focused on reading, writing and orality. Through workshops, interviews and other interactive events with library networks in Mexico, Peru, Chile and Colombia, and with the support of PGR RA Diana Cruz, Evelyn Arizpe and Julie McAdam gathered feedback from librarians to create the Manual. The Manual shares examples and practical suggestions on inclusion, evaluation and sustainability. The project was supported by an ESRC IAA grant which aimed to extend the reach of the Mediator Toolkit at the core of a REF2021 Impact Case Study. The Toolkit supports supporting cultural mediators working with migrant children through children’s literature and arts-based activities. The Manual is available online for libraries and other cultural mediators across Latin America to help sustain quality literacy mediation with displaced families and children.
