Biography

I graduated with a 1st Class BSc/Hons in Microbiology from Glasgow Caledonian University, where I first sparked an interest in host-pathogen interactions in health and disease. I pursued this interest during my PhD at the University of Glasgow, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, where I investigated oral biofilm development in young children coincident with the maturation of salivary immune responses.

After my PhD, I worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, School of Infection and Immunity, where I developed a discovery pipeline for therapeutic targets for periodontal disease. This work has formed the basis of further investigations of cellular mechanisms in oral health and disease. Subsequently, I was the lead post-doctoral researcher on a Versus Arthritis Research grant. In this project, I identified a novel mechanism of breach of immune tolerance related to non-endogenous bacterial citrullination. These data have implications for understanding how oral bacterial infection can drive autoimmune responses.

In 2018, I took up a teaching position at the University of Glasgow Dental School. Here, I am exploring how oral bacteria exploit innate immunity to subvert adaptive immune responses, and how this impacts the maintenance of immune tolerance in the oral mucosa.
