Professor Andrew Smith

  • Professor of Clinical Bacteriology (Dental School)
  • Associate (Institute of Infection Immunity & Inflammation)

Research interests

Andrew Smith is Professor of Clinical Bacteriology & Honorary Consultant Microbiologist for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Microbiology Consultant Lead for Medical Device Decontamination NHS Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GG&C). Deputy Director of the Scottish Haemophilus, Legionella, Meningococcus and Pneumococcus Reference Laboratory (http://www.nhsggc.org.uk/about-us/professional-support-sites/scottish-micro) and Lead Consultant for Oral and Maxillofacial microbiology, NHS GG&C.

Professor Smith is also the current chair of the Association of Clinical Oral Microbiologists, UK tasked with leading infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship and clinical training issues relating to oral and maxillofacial microbiology. He is the current treasurer of the Scottish Microbiology Association (http://www.sma.scot.nhs.uk) and Assistant editor of the Journal of Hospital Infection (http://jhiblogger.wordpress.com)

Professsor Andrew Smith is also Deputy Director of SHLMPRL based at Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary and he leads on the NHS service, research and development linked to mucosal pathogens such as;

  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Legionella pneumophila
  • Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Neisseria meningitidis
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Bordetella pertussis

His clinical and research interests are divided into three main areas

Infection prevention.
Much of this work has focused on translational activity reducing the risk of iatrogenic CJD from contaminated medical devices. Collaborations with Industry and University colleagues in the UK & Internationally explore methods of estimating tissue residues following reprocessing and novel cleaning & storage technologies. Current projects involve investigating CJD  risk reduction measures for reprocessing of neurosurgical instruments (http://www.gla.ac.uk/news/headline_295338_en.html) and optimizing benchtop washer disinfectors for general dental practitioners. PhD student programmes include investigations into the cleaning and sterilization of dental handpiece powertools (http://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/mvls/industrialpartnershipsphds/projects/)

He sits on a number of National (http://www.stn.ed.ac.uk) and International committees (http://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/) that oversee research and standard development in the field. Other appointments include acting as an expert advisor on decontamination sciences to the Norwegian National Decotamination Reference group (http://www.oslo-universitetssykehus.no/omoss/english/Sider/side.aspx ) and on infection prevention for the CJD support Network Charity (http://www.cjdsupport.net). He is also the current treasurer and Vice President of the Scottish Microbiology Associations

Microbial virulence factors
and their ecology. In collaboration with Professor T Mitchell, University of Birmingham (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/iandi/mitchell-tim.aspx) we have been uncovering the close links between the virulent pathogenic pneumococcus and the more benign oral streptococci, this work is shedding light on the evolution of pathogenic traits in the pneumococcus and its implications for pneumococcal vaccine design. For example our group identified and named a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin named mitilysin related to pneumococcal pneumolysin. Current work is focusing on the whole genome sequencing of a number of Streptococcus mitis carriage and invasive strains (http://microbewiki.kenyon.edu/index.php/Streptococcus_mitis).

In collaboration with Health Protection Scotland, the reference laboratory work at SHLMPRL provides epidemiological data to inform pubic health and policy making within Scotland (http://www.hps.scot.nhs.uk/resp/pneumococcaldisease.aspx)

Clinical Bacteriology.
Our diagnostic facilities are located at the recently refurbished New Lister building, Glasgow Royal Infimary and provide state of the art microbiology laboratory services.

Working with surgical colleagues at the Regional Oral and Maxillo-facial surgery unit at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow (http://www.sdmag.co.uk/index.php/articles/pm_article/look_at_the_bigger_picture/) we investigate the microbiology and morbidity related to severe odontogenic infections.  Further collaborations with the Glasgow University Aanesthetics department include (http://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(15)00181-4/fulltext) involve  studying links between the bacteriology of blood infections and clinical outcomes.

Our latest work involves using Social media to lead on antimicrobial stewardship for acute maxillo-facial infections in collaboration with the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners and the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/6598-antibiotic-action-in-dentistry?locale=en)
