Biography

Dr Rob Maslen is PG Convener for the School of Critical Studies. He also convenes the MLitt in Fantasy.

A Senior Lecturer in English Literature since 1999, he is the author of three books: Elizabethan Fictions (1997), Shakespeare and Comedy (2005), and The Shakespeare Handbook (2008), and has edited Sir Philip Sidney’s Apology for Poetry (2002) and Mervyn Peake’s Collected Poems (2008), as well as co-editing Thomas Dekker/Thomas Middleton’s News from Gravesend for the Oxford Middleton (2007) and Mervyn Peake’s Complete Nonsense (2011).  He has written many essays on Renaissance literature and twentieth-century fantasy and science fiction, with subjects ranging from fake translations to adaptation in Japanese anime.  He is a Fellow of the English Association and has held teaching appointments at Christ Church, Oxford; Royal Holloway, University of London; the University of Exeter; Dartmouth College, NH; the University of St Thomas, MN; and Lund University.



 


Supervision

Dr Maslen has supervised fourteen successfully completed PhD theses in the following areas: representations of Islam and Muslims in early modern drama (Mohamed Abu-Baker); English and French prose fiction by women in the seventeenth century (Séverine Genieys); George Chapman (Shona McIntosh); Victorian fantastic literature, art and architecture (Helen Sutherland); twentieth-century fantasy and modernism (Margaret Hiley); the Irish fantasy writer Lord Dunsany (Tania Scott); eighteenth- and nineteenth-century phantasmagoria (Douglas Small); Tolkien’s monsters (Christina Fawcett); co-authorship in the works of Middleton and Dekker (Eilidh Kane); C. S. Lewis, Ursula K. Le Guin and the language of fantasy (Shezra Kamran); early modern letters (Felicity Maxwell); imaginative and intellectual cartographies in early modern England (Patrick Murray); and creative writing (Elizabeth Reeder, Chiew Siah Tei).  He has taught on graduate courses in creative writing, Medieval and Renaissance studies, theatre studies, Victorian studies, children’s literature and modernism. He is interested in supervising theses on almost any topic connected with early modern literature (c. 1500-1640) or with fantasy/the fantastic.
