Biography
Carole Hough is Professor of Onomastics. Her research interests include English and Scottish personal names and place-names, English historical linguistics, literary onomastics, onomastic theory, Old English language and literature, semantics and lexicology. Recent books and edited volumes include The Daily Lives of the Anglo-Saxons (2018, with Carole Biggam and Daria Izdebska), Mapping English Metaphor Through Time (2016, with Wendy Anderson and Ellen Bramwell), The Oxford Handbook of Names and Naming (2016), "An Ald Reht": Essays on Anglo-Saxon Law (2014), Colour Studies. A Broad Spectrum (2014, with Wendy Anderson, Carole P. Biggam and Christian Kay), and Beginning Old English (2nd edn 2013, with John Corbett). She also has about 350 other publications, mainly on name studies, Old and Middle English, historical and contemporary semantics, Anglo-Saxon law and manuscript studies. She edited the journal Nomina from 1998-2007. She was Principal Investigator for the JISC-funded Scots Words and Place-names project (March-November 2011), in partnership with Scottish Language Dictionaries and the Scottish Place-Name Society. She was also Co-Investigator for the AHRC-funded projects Scottish Toponymy in Transition (2011-2014) and Mapping Metaphor with the Historical Thesaurus (2012-2015), and Principal Investigator for the RSE-funded Cognitive Toponymy project (2014-2016). She was Principal Investigator for the Leverhulme-funded project Recovering the Earliest English Language in Scotland: evidence from place-names (2016-2019).

Professor Hough is President of the English Place-Name Society. She is also a former President of the International Council of Onomastic Sciences, the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists, and the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland, and a former Convener of the Scottish Place-Name Society. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
