Visiting Scholars and Researchers

The School of Critical Studies operates a Visiting Scholar and Researcher Scheme with periods up to 12 months' residency available, and accepts visiting academics or PhD students from a wide range of backgrounds and research fields.

During your visit, you will have opportunities to discuss and share ideas with another academic in our School who works within the same field of interest. From this mutual collaboration may come ideas and, possibly, future projects.

What is a Visiting Scholar/ Researcher?

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars are academics who work at other higher education institutes throughout the world. They will have already completed their PhD and wish to collaborate with a Univeristy of Glasgow academic on thier research.

Visiting Researcher

Visiting Researchers are those who are currently undertaking their PhD and wish to come to the University of Glasgow to work with an academic in support of their PhD research.

How to Apply

Please note that all applications must be made at least 3 months prior to your arrival date.

The process differs slightly for Visiting Scholars and Researchers, please follow the route that applies to you below.

Visiting Scholars Application

You can apply at any time to become a visiting research scholar by completing the SCS Visiting Scholar Application Form 2026 and emailing it, together with a short CV (no more than 2 pages), to critstudies-visitingscholars@glasgow.ac.uk.

Research visits normally take place during semester time (September to June).

Visiting Research Students

Students who wish to be formally supervised by a member of our academic staff must identify and contact the relevant academic or Subject Area in the first instance. You can search our staff research profiles to find a suitable academic to work with.

When making contact, please send your curriculum vitae and details of your research plans. If you receive a positive response from a relevant academic, you can make a formal application to the School via the application form available on the College of Arts & Humanities Graduate School webpage

For any further information please refer to University of Glasgow’s Visiting Postgraduate Researcher Policy.

Fees

The School will normally charge a bench fee to the visiting researcher from other institutions who wish to be based at the University of Glasgow. This is to cover resources agreed locally by the School. This may include access to seminars and other scholarly activity within the School as well as access to the GU libraries and IT facilities as appropriate.

For Visiting Scholars who are not current research students, the baseline fee is £2,000 per academic year but a fee remission scheme may apply for colleagues from institutions in developing countries or for other strategic development reasons. If the visit is shorter than one semester or academic year then the School would be willing to negotiate a pro rata fee. This will be confirmed to you once we have received your application.
