Dr Burak Kizilkaya

Biography

I am currently a Lecturer in Computer Networking within the School of Computing Science. I hold a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Glasgow (2023) with a doctoral research on "Task-Oriented Joint Design of Communication and Computing for Internet of Skills", focused on 5G-based teleoperation systems, integrating communication, networking, and robotic control, where I developed real-time AI-enhanced teleoperation frameworks. My academic background also includes a BSc and MSc in Computer Engineering, where I explored energy-efficient networking and edge inference for emergency applications.

Prior to my current role, I was a Research Associate at the Communications, Sensing and Imaging Hub within the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. My work focused on research and commercialisation projects in AI-enhanced networked systems, predictive control for teleoperation, modular robotics, VR/AR immersive applications, and resilient real-time communication architectures.

Research interests

My research focuses on the intersection of robotics, next generation communications & networking, and immersive technologies, with a strong emphasis on real-world applications. I am particularly interested in:

  • Telerobotics and Autonomous Systems: Developing low-latency, resilient teleoperation frameworks and autonomous robotic systems, especially for complex environments such as nuclear sites and healthcare applications.
  • Wireless Communications for Control Systems: Designing and optimizing 5G/6G-enabled wireless control mechanisms, with special attention to real-time feedback, haptic communications, and Age of Information for life-critical systems.
  • Cybersecurity in Human-Robot Interaction: Investigating vulnerabilities and adversarial attacks in biometric and keystroke-dynamics-based user authentication systems, particularly in robotic and IoT-enabled environments.
  • Smart Cities and IoT Applications: Integrating virtual power plants, sensor networks, and intelligent infrastructure to enhance urban sustainability and energy efficiency.
