Biography

Takao Terui is Lecturer in Global Cultural Industries at the University of Glasgow. Prior to this, he served as an Assistant Professor in Cultural and Creative Industries at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, a UK–China joint institution.

His research has been published in leading international journals, including Media, Culture & Society, International Journal of Cultural Policy, and Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society.

Research interests

Drawing on his experience of growing up in Japan, studying in the UK, and working in China, Takao adopts a comparative and international approach to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping creative industries and cultural policy.

His current research focuses on the implications of generative AI for cultural production, with particular attention to de-Westernising perspectives and cross-cultural differences.

He is currently preparing a monograph that explores the interactions between creative workers, platforms, policymakers, and fan communities in Japan in response to generative AI. The project seeks to broaden existing debates by foregrounding geographical and cultural diversity in understandings of AI within cultural policy and the creative industries.
