Research in Cultural Industries
Cultural Industries is a rich and dynamic research community featuring many leading and emerging scholars in our diverse interdisciplinary field. Our research covers the widest range of topics in the cultural and creative industries, media and cultural policy, as well as discrete expertise in different arts and cultural disciplines and practices. We are a vibrant and outward-looking subject, engaged in research of local and global import, with strong commitments to theoretical rigour, as well as to applied, active, and publicly engaged work.
Our researchers are known globally for making exceptional contributions to the study of cultural industries and we support an inclusive and international community of PhD students.
In the UK’s latest Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2021), over 90% of our research was recognised as either ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, while 100% of our Research Environment and Impact Case Studies were rated within these top two categories.
Centre for Cultural Policy Research
Many of our researchers are members of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research. The Centre produces world-class analytical, theoretical and empirical research that contributes to public debate on cultural, communications and media policies in Scotland, the UK, the EU, and globally.
Our work is supported by strong international academic links and close working relationships with policymakers, cultural agencies, and the media and communications industries. More details about the Centre can be found here:
