Biography
Dr Joseph Timmons is a Consultant Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine in NHS Lanarkshire and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He combines an active NHS consultant practice with clinical and translational research in Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Dr Timmons graduated in Medicine from the University of Dundee with MBChB (Honours), having previously completed a BMSc (First-Class Honours) in Forensic and Legal Medicine. During his undergraduate training he received multiple academic distinctions, including the George Rankin Tudhope Prize for the top mark in final written medical examinations and the Heller Prize for outstanding all-round performance as a graduating medical student.
He completed postgraduate training in Diabetes and Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine in the West of Scotland and was awarded MRCP(UK) and MRCPS(Glasg) prior to achieving his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). He undertook clinical research supervised by Prof John Petrie and Prof James Boyle leading to the award of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree by the University of Glasgow, for a thesis examining Adjunct Therapy in Type 1 Diabetes.
Dr Timmons has a weekly research day funded by NHS Lanarkshire. He is aiming to expand diabetes clinical trial recruitment in Lanarkshire in a population historically overlooked. He is Principal Investigator in two current clinical trials in type 1 diabetes and has been a co-investigator in the recently completed Triple Therapy with Semaglutide, Dapagliflozin and Insulin in people with Type 1 Diabetes (TTT1) Trial. He has additionally completed numerous analyses of data from the REMOVAL Trial examining the impact of metformin in Type 1 Diabetes.

Research groups
Teaching
Dr Timmons is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He is an educational supervisor for undergraduate students at the University of Glasgow and the University of Dundee. He is additionally a supervisor for postgraduate doctors in the Foundation Programme. Dr Timmons is an examiner for OSCE Examinations at the University of Glasgow. He has contributed as a chapter author to the textbook Diabetes Drug Notes and as a contibutor to The Medical Take Podcast. More recently, he has been Conference Director for the Endocrine and Diabetes Symposium at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
