Biography
Professor Luiz Santos is a veterinary anaesthesiologist and academic clinician at the University of Glasgow. His clinical and academic career has included appointments in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, with specialist residency training undertaken at Cornell University.
He holds a PhD in Human Factors and Patient Safety from the University of Queensland and is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). His work brings together clinical veterinary anaesthesia, education, human factors and patient safety.
His research focuses on applying human factors principles to improve safety in veterinary medicine, with particular interests in safety culture, psychological safety, leadership, error reporting and disclosure, the second victim phenomenon, incivility, clinical communication and simulation-based education.
Research interests
My research sits at the intersection of human factors, patient safety and veterinary medicine, exploring how systems, organisational culture and everyday workplace interactions influence the safety and wellbeing of both patients and veterinary professionals.
My principal research interests include safety culture and psychological safety, leadership, error reporting and disclosure, the second victim phenomenon, incivility, clinical communication and handover, and staff wellbeing.
I am particularly interested in translating human factors and patient safety principles into practical improvements in veterinary healthcare, including structured communication, incident learning, debriefing and morbidity and mortality review, and simulation-based education. I also maintain a clinical research interest in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia.

Teaching
I contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, with a particular focus on clinical teaching and experiential learning.
My educational interests include simulation-based education, human factors and patient safety, clinical communication, crisis resource management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. I am involved in the clinical training and supervision of veterinary students and specialist trainees in veterinary anaesthesia.
I have a particular interest in creating psychologically safe clinical learning environments and in using simulation, debriefing and reflective learning to prepare students and clinicians for complex clinical situations.
