Research interests

I am interested in the integration of behavioural, physiological and neurophysiological techniques to investigate animal welfare issues, primarily in farm animals. Specific areas of interest include pain, humane slaughter and development of novel methods to assess welfare and affective state. I have applied range of approaches to tackle these issues including behaviour, sensory neuroscience, electroencephalogram analysis, remote physiological monitoring and infra-red thermography. I am also interested in animal ethics and attitudes to animals in society, primarily in relation to developing better methods to teach ethics and assessment of ethical reasoning ability. My research has been impactful - DEFRA funded research on emergency killing in response to Avian Influenza led to national availability of two novel depopulation methods and my research on beak trimming in laying hens directly influenced UK policy. I led an international team to produce a research dossier enabling addition of Low Atmospheric Pressure Stunning in poultry to EU legislation, and recent BBSRC funded work investigated alternative euthanasia methods for laboratory rodents.  Current BBSRC funded research on breathlessness in birds has direct applicability to welfare assessment and for billions of farmed poultry.
