TAWIRI

TAWIRI coordinates and conducts all wildlife research in Tanzania. The Institute works with TAWIRI on several research projects, in some cases providing support and in others leading joint research activities.

Grant Hopcraft works closely with TAWIRI on a regular basis, leading a team of TAWIRI and Institute staff and students to track wildebeest activity and collect information on the Serengeti ecosystem.

TAWIRI is currently overseeing the reintroduction of African Wild Dogs (aka Painted Wolves) into the Serengeti National Park. The Institute is supporting this work, and conducted the genetic analysis that showed the dogs were in fact the same population that had previously occupied the park, and that they were free from inbreeding depression. This project is a massive undertaking by TAWIRI, and we are proud to have played a small but vital role in its success.
