An award of £790k from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to Prof Todd and his team.

Researchers in the Institute for Neuroscience and Psychology have been awarded £790k from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to investigate how nerve cells in the spinal cord are involved in processing sensory inputs that causes itch.

Prof Andrew Todd, who leads the research team, said: "Chronic itch is a distressing condition that affects over 20% of the population, but we still know little about the nerve circuits in the spinal cord that are involved in transmitting and suppressing itch and how these interact with pain-signalling pathways. Identifying the types of nerve cell that are involved is essential if we are to develop new treatments for chronic itch and pain. We are very grateful to the MRC for recognising the importance of basic research in this field."‌
