Researchers from the Centre along with colleagues in Switzerland, Malawi, the US and Panama, have demonstrated novel parasite behaviour which offers a potential new target for malaria diagnosis and intervention. This new discovery has been highlighted in three new publications in Nature Communications, Science Advances and MBio.

A new programme of clinical research in both Malawi and Glasgow has just been announced which will be supported by the Scottish Government, the World Bank and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Centre. The WCMP has been closely involved in planning and will be active contributors over the next 5 years.

In addition to infecting the blood, trypanosomes (the parasite that causes African sleeping sickness) can lie dormant in the skin. This could be an important source of infection and explain why we have so far failed to eradicate this important disease.
