Biography

A University of Aberdeen Microbiology graduate, Professor Andrew Roe arrived at the University of Glasgow as a new lecturer in 2006 after completing his PhD.

His PhD, with Professor Ian Booth, looked at the effect of weak acids on bacterial physiology: how and why food preservatives like acetic acid and benzoic acid work to prevent food spoilage.

This was followed by postdoctoral work with Professor David Gally exploring bacterial virulence, working on the 'emerging' pathogen - E. coli O157:H7, the classic burger bug.

His career progression within the Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation saw Andrew start his own research group, focusing on Escherichia coli, which he considered an exciting and challenging chance to explore new areas.

Promotion to Professor followed in 2018 before the appointment as Head of Bacteriology in the summer of 2020 - a role in which supporting early career researchers and developing the next generation of microbiologists will be areas of particular focus.

Regulation and expression of virulence factors in enterohaemorraghic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7.
