Biography

Terry holds the post of David Cargill Chair of Geriatric Medicine and Honorary Consultant Physician in Stroke and Geriatric Medicine. Terry has a broad research portfolio, his principal research interests are around trial methodology, functional assessment, and neuropsychological consequences of cardiovascular disease.

Terry has published extensively on topics relating to stroke, cognition and test accuracy and has authored original research, opinion pieces and editorials for journals such as British Medical Journal; Journal of the American Medical Association and New England Journal of Medicine.

He is Principal Investigator for a number of studies. He held the inaugural Chief Scientist Office/Stroke Association Priority Program Grant for his research into cognitive outcomes following stroke, has held large grants from Government, Research Councils and EU and currently leads the Scottish Funding Council Brain Health ARC collaboration.

Recent notable research outputs include co-authoring best practice guidance for test accuracy studies in dementia; creating online training for stroke trials and developing short form assessment scales that are being used in various research studies and clinical sites.

Terry is passionate about evidence based practice and has worked to raise standards in clinical research involving older adults. He holds various editorial board positions including Deputy Editor Age and Ageing and Synopsis Editor Stroke. He chairs the European Stroke Organisation Guideline Committee and in his roles with the NIHR Complex Review Support Unit and NIHR Evidence Synthesis Groups he has worked to make complex methods accessible to all.

A key driver of Terry’s work is ensuring clinical research is implemented in practice. He achieves this through national and international roles such as UK Clinical Research Network lead for Ageing, and NHS Research Scotland Clinical Ageing Lead. A recent example is his work with Healthcare Improvement Scotland around creating a national screening tool and treatment bundle for older adults with frailty.

Within the University, Terry has a number of supportive roles. He led the Glasgow Academic Training Environment, has a seat on University Senate and is also Vice Chair of the MVLS ethics committee. He is the Undergraduate lead for Geriatric Medicine, advisor of studies for undergraduate medical students and was part of the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team. Beyond the University, Terry’s academic citizenship includes chairing Trial Steering Committees and Data Safety Monitoring Boards; examining for higher degrees and sitting on Grant and Fellowship review boards for various research funders including Alzheimer’s Society, Chief Scientist Office and Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke.

Communicating science is a particular strength, and in his role working with patient, carers and lay public as lead for the Scottish Stroke Research Network, he has initiated a number of schemes around research dissemination and involvement. As clinical member of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Stroke and advisor to Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Terry has ensured that research results inform policy.

Terry combines his research portfolio with active teaching and clinical commitments in the stroke units of the major Glasgow hospitals.

Research interests

Research Theme: Vascular Diseases and Comorbidities

Terry's principal research interest is around how we measure complex concepts such as memory, thinking and physical function. His work aims to improve assessment of these constructs, both for research trials and for clinical practice. Active areas of research include improving outcome assessment in acute stroke studies; describing the properties of cognitive screening tests and using electronic health records as a tool for research.

With colleagues in the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health, his work around improving stroke assessment has informed a novel, video based assessment platform that has been adopted by a number of multicentre stroke studies, including pivotal trials supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and European Union (EU FP7). Recognising inconsistency in assessment across large clinical trials, Terry co-created online training resources for stroke researchers that have become industry standard.

Patients and carers have consistently identified memory and thinking as an area requiring more research in stroke and cardiovascular disease. Working with patients, carers and lay public, Terry is developing a portfolio of research around the psychological consequences of cardiovascular disease. Recent work has included developing short tests suitable for use in emergency settings; describing the natural history of cognitive and mood change following stroke and using electronic health records to assess psychological outcomes. This work is already informing the design and conduct of trials, observational cohorts and translational studies.

Evidence synthesis is a central theme to Terry’s work. With the Cochrane Dementia Group, he completed the first Cochrane Test Accuracy review looking at cognitive assessments and helped write best practice and methodological guidance on various aspects of test accuracy research. His passion for improving the conduct and reporting of test accuracy research continues and Terry was part of the NIHR Complex Reviews Support Unit (based in University of Glasgow) and is now a core member of the NIHR Evidence Synthesis Group (ESG), providing support and guidance around test accuracy work.

Supervision

Teaching

Terry developed the Glasgow Academic Training Environment (GATE) scheme, working with doctors in the early stages of training and developing their research potential. He continues to give lectures and tutorials on research methods.

Terry has worked with the School of Medicine to ensure that undergraduate training includes issues pertinent to older adults. He has created a range of teaching and educational materials around stroke, dementia and other older adult syndromes.

He runs the themed undergraduate teaching days on older adult medicine and provides didactic lectures and tutorials on assessment; research methodology and stroke. He regularly contributes questions and practical assessments for the final MBChB examinations.

Terry understands the international importance of education and training around older adults. He has delivered teaching lectures, workshops and tutorials in China, South Africa, and Thailand. With CIVIS (A European Civic University) he co-organised a European Summer School in ageing research.

Terry is primary supervisor to PhD and MD students from a variety of backgrounds. He has supervised to completion a variety of PhD, MSc, BSc (Med Sci) and International Exchange students. He engages in schemes to increase participation of students in research and each summer he hosts clinical research electives for students with an interest in stroke, dementia or older adult medicine.

Terry is always happy to hear from prospective students.
