Biography

Dr Alyson Miller graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a BSc (First Class Honours) in Immunology and Pharmacology, and a PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh. After a short post-doctoral position at University College London, she moved to Australia to continue her post-doctoral training, initially at the University of Melbourne and then at Monash University. In 2007, she was awarded a Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research Fellowship followed by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia Career Development Fellowship (2009-2013). In 2013, she was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellowship from RMIT University, where she established her independent research program. Alyson returned to Scotland in early 2017 to take up a Senior Lecturer position in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences (BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre) at the University of Glasgow. Alyson’s research has consistently been funded by competitive research grants, largely from the NHMRC, and she has received a number of prestigious international and Australian young scientist awards in recognition of her research contributions.

Research interests

Over the past 12 years, Dr Miller’s research has used a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to study the complex mechanisms that regulate cerebral artery function and brain blood flow during health; and identify abnormalities underlying the cerebral artery dysfunction and inadequate brain blood flow that accompanies cardiovascular disease and stroke. This research has made significant contributions to our understanding of fundamental reactive oxygen species (ROS) signalling in cerebral arteries; the multi-complex enzymes that generate ROS (the Nox oxidases), and how these enzymes contribute to cerebral artery dysfunction in the setting of cardiovascular risk factors and after stroke. The primary focus of Dr Miller’s current research is the identification of therapeutic targets and ‘multi-target’ candidate drugs for the prevention and treatment of stroke. The scope of this research extends beyond the traditional research approach of identifying novel therapeutics for brain injury. Indeed, it also seeks to identify strategies to modify post-stroke systemic complications including immunosuppression, weight loss/muscle wasting, and lung injury, which are also key determinants of stroke outcome.
