Biography

Richard Shaw is an epidemiologist who is interested in how health inequalities develop across the life course with a focus on secondary analysis of administrative data and cohort studies. He has been part of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing (IHW) at the University of Glasgow since 2012. Prior to that he worked to that he worked at the Universities of Oxford, Southampton and York, and studied for a PhD at the Department of Epidemiology at University College London.

He currently has an Understanding Society Fellowship focusing on evaluating the consequences for wellbeing of changes in policies relating to the Education Maintence Allowance and Tuition fees. He is also finishing work related to COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing National Core Study, Other recent work involves the potential biases linked administrative data.

Research interests

Broadly Richard’s research interests are in how a person’s social context influence their health across the life course.

Specific areas of research interest include mental health, socio-economic determinants of health, education, loneliness, ethnicity, neighbourhoods, suicide and social care.

Ares of expertise include quantitative methods, longitudinal analysis, and administrative data.
