Biography

Research experience & expertise

  • Pankaj is a Research Associate with Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment (HEHTA), School of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow, UK. He has an overall experience of 15+ years.
  • He was previously affiliated with Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India as Economic Evaluation Specialist. His past work focussed on health technology assessments, impact evaluations, healthcare financing, healthcare costing of benefits packages and public health programs/facilities in India.
  • He has 70+ publications in leading international and national journals. He is an academic editor for PLOS ONE. He is an advisory board member of journal Heliyon as health economics expert. He is a reviewer for reputed journals such as Lancet Global Health, PLOS ONE, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, BMJ Open, BMJ Health Services Research; Pharmacoeconomics Open; International Journal of Health Policy and Management; Current Medical Research & Opinion; Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology; Medical Journal Armed Forces India etc.

Research interests

Past Research Experience

  • His past experience include health technology assessment, economic evaluations; impact evaluations; healthcare costing, public health programmes; health benefit package; financial risk protection and universal health coverage. His experience also includes developing mathematical models, predictive models, and methodologies for composite performance indicators in public health research in Indian context.
  • He also contributed for costing of health benefit package of Lao-PDR and lead a fiscal space analysis for comprehensive immunisation services in Laos.

Current Research Projects

  • Evaluation of Health Technology Assessment in India-Return on Investment: In this activity, we aimed to demonstrate the impact of HTA in India after the institutionalisation of Indian HTA body in 2017. We estimated impact in terms of returns of investment (RoI) from economic perspective selecting 4 sample HTAs commissioned and completed by HTAIN.
  • Impact assessment of living laboratory project in Glasgow:  In this project, we intend to assess the impact of the living laboratory project in Glasgow. Living laboratory project is a multi-component project and therefore, impact assessment will be multi-dimensional in nature. We aim to assess/demonstrate the impact at systems level (health, social, economic impact etc.) as a result of living laboratory project using mixed-methods approach and selecting case studies from project components.

  • Pilot study of a ketogenic diet in bipolar disorder

  • Book Chapter on ‘Fiscal Space for Health’: Invited to co-author a chapter on ‘Fiscal Space for Health’. Book: Health Financing in Low and Middle Income Countries: the Path to Universal Health Coverage.
