Biography

I am a clinical psychologist and researcher in neuropsychology. After an initial degree in psychology from the University of Exeter (2004) I completed a PhD focussed on prospective memory in people with acquired brain injury at the MRC Cognition & Brain Sciences Unit (University of Cambridge, 2008). I stayed at the CBU for a postdoctoral fellowship (2007-10) before moving to London for clinical training (King's College London, 2013).

Since qualifying I have worked clinically in NHS posts, initially in Neuropsychiatry and Memory Disorders within South London & Maudsley NHS Trust, then for several years at the Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, and more recently at the Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre, part of St George's University Hospitals NHS Trust. I have also held academic and related roles at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. I moved to Glasgow to join the DClinPsy programme team in November 2019, working part time and retaining a remote part-time role with St George's, and in 2021 I increased my hours with the university and became Research Director for the Applied/Clinical Neuropsychology programmes alongside my role on the DClinPsy programme. I retain a clinical affiliation with the Department of Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Health Psychology at St George's.

In addition to my primary roles, I am Chief Editor of The Neuropsychologist, periodical of the BPS Division of Neuropsychology, an Executive Editor of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, and an Editorial Board member for Brain Impairment

Research interests

My research interests are in neuropsychology and neuropsychological rehabilitation in adults. My primary interests are in improving assessment and rehabilitation techniques for the cognitive problems that frequently occur after brain injury and that impair everyday functioning (e.g. those concerned with attention, memory and executive functioning), but I am also interested in emotion regulation, psychological adjustment, holistic approaches to rehabilitation, and neuropsychological formulation.

Supervision

I am interested in supervising students/trainees on any project within my broad areas of interest and competence.

I supervise the research of a number of DClinPsy trainees and MSc students each year. Completed DClinPsy projects include:

  • Tanya Denmark (KCL, 2016, secondary supervisor with Professor Robin Morris): Using Virtual Reality to investigate multitasking ability in individuals with frontal lobe lesions.
  • Laura Brown (KCL, 2018, secondary supervisor with Professor Robin Morris):The Self and Self-Knowledge after Frontal Lobe Neurosurgical lesions
  • Aparna Kapoor (KCL, 2019, primary supervisor with Professor Robin Morris): Standardising and validating the Cleveland Verbal Working Memory Test with Interference (CVWMT-I).
  • Steffen Nestler (KCL, 2020, primary supervisor with Professor Robin Morris): Social Cognition in Acquired Brain Injury.
  • Andriana Milia-Argieti (UoG, 2022, primary supervisor with Professor Jon Evans): The Hotel test of multitasking: Psychometric properties and norms.
  • Elinor Brooks (UoG, 2022, primary supervisor with Professor Jon Evans): Exploring the clinical management of confabulation within neuropsychology services.

Teaching

I co-ordinate the neuropsychology-focussed teaching for the DClinPsy programme, and one of the research methods modules, which covers the development of a proposal for trainees' major research projects and systematic review. I deliver a number of teaching sessions within these modules, as well as some sessions and tutorials for the MSc Applied/Clinical Neuropsychology programmes, for which I am Research Director.  In 2023 I was made a Fellow of the University of Glasgow's Recognising Excellence in Teaching programme.
