Dr Barbara Nicholl

  • Senior Lecturer (General Practice & Primary Care)
  • Associate (School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing)

Biography

Barbara Nicholl joined General Practice and Primary Care in July 2012. Her role here is split between research and coordination of the MSc in Primary Care, on which she also has teaching responsibilities.

Barbara is currently developing a portfolio of research around the epidemiology of chronic pain. Her particular interests are the management of chronic pain in primary care, the impact chronic pain has on individuals with other long term conditions (multimorbidity and treatment burden), and the comorbidity of chronic pain and depression (and the links between physical and mental health conditions).

Prior to her post here Barbara worked at the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre at Keele University on an NIHR funded cluster randomised controlled trial investigating osteoarthritis and comorbid anxiety and depressive symptoms. Barbara completed her PhD, entitled “Investigation of a multifactorial causal model for chronic widespread pain” in 2009 at the University of Manchester, which involved exploring the role of psychosocial, genetic and physical trauma factors in the onset of chronic widespread pain.
