Immune Squad: Primary School Workshops
Dr Emma Parsons and Molly Mckenzie recently delivered six sessions of their Immune Squad workshop, which focused on how the immune system can help protect us from “unhealthy cells”.
Funded by STEM Seedlings, Emma and Molly visited Hillhead Primary School and St Teresa’s Primary School in Glasgow and Gartcosh Primary School in North Lanarkshire and taught Primary 4-6 pupils about cells in the immune system.
The pupils played a game similar to the popular TV show Traitors to learn about how immune cells pair up and work together to help keep us healthy. The pupils took on the role of different immune cells, healthy cells and unhealthy cells, followed by a colour-by-numbers activity which involved key maths skills for this age.
The pupils really enjoyed themselves with feedback including:
“I loved your games and you also have inspired me to maybe be a scientist”
“I loved it the powerpoint it was amazing the activities were so fun and you explained it fantastically”.
