Academy of Citizens
Who is it for?
The Academy of Citizens (AoC) is open to anyone living in Scotland (or with ties to Scotland) who wants to contribute to shaping the future of food.
No prior experience, training, or background in research is required.
It is for people interested in food, health, the environment, and equity. The AoC is an integral part of the SCAF membership, and brings together members of the public with researchers and practitioners to share perspectives and explore questions about how to make food systems more sustainable, healthy, and equitable. Everyone has knowledge and experience to contribute, and all are welcome to take part.
What is its purpose?
Research on food and nutrition often happens without input from those most affected by it.
The Academy of Citizens (AoC) provides an opportunity for members of the public to be included in SCAF activities, and a space where they can take part in setting research priorities, shaping research questions, alongside researchers and practitioners.
The aim is to create more democratic, relevant, and responsive research by including a broader range of voices and experiences. This helps ensure that research addresses real needs and supports better outcomes for people, communities, and the environment in Scotland.
How can I get involved?
There are two ways to get involved:
1. Anyone can join the Scottish Alliance for Food (SCAF) as a member. No background in research or formal training is needed. As a member, you can stay informed, participate in discussions, and contribute to a growing network. Our events are free, inclusive and collaborative.
If you are not already a SCAF member, join here
2. You can apply to join the newly launched Academy of Citizens Panel. This small panel will help guide how SCAF brings together citizens, researchers, and practitioners. It will play a role in shaping the design of collaborative research and engagement activities across the Alliance’s work.
