Doughnut Economics is a visual framework for monitoring progress towards the modern challenge of meeting people's needs while staying within the planet's means. Achieving this balance is challenging because environmental, social and economic issues are closely connected, and changes in one area can have unintended effects elsewhere.
This webinar introduces a new modelling approach designed to explore these connections and support better policy decision-making. Using Scotland as a case study, the model examines how sustainable food systems interact with social and economic inequalities. It illustrates the relationships and trade-offs among factors such as soil health, food production, carbon emissions and social outcomes.
By testing different scenarios, the model shows that no single action is enough to achieve multiple sustainability goals. Instead, coordinated approaches are needed to deliver the best overall outcomes.
The webinar will also demonstrate an interactive dashboard that lets users explore and compare scenarios generated by the model.
Dr Cris Hasan, Research Associate, University of Glasgow
Dr Cris Hasan is an applied mathematician working on the GALLANT project as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Glasgow. He obtained his PhD in mathematics at the University of Auckland, with a thesis focused on dynamical systems of multiple timescales. His main research interest centres on developing quantitative models and computational tools to address complex real-world problems, ranging from ecological dynamics to sustainable food systems.
