Programmes
The Centre's Research Programmes are guided by our Programme Directors, each responsible for shaping research directions and activities aligned with the Centre and University's overall vision and priorities, while supporting collaboration across disciplines.
Life Sciences
Programme Director: Professor Sandosh Padmanabhan
New approaches to enhance healthcare, diagnose patients early and accurately, and to deliver next generation precision medical treatments are at the basis of our data science and AI activity in the medical sciences.
AI supports our research into record linkage and underpins a significant number of different projects focusing on a spectrum of outcomes, including childhood neurodevelopment and multimorbidity. We have world leading research into malaria surveillance and diagnosis where AI plays a significant role in understanding insect-borne disease spread, as well as in medical imaging research.
Data Science and AI also play a key role in public health and policy research, including a role in understanding healthcare monitoring and wearable technology, long-term condition management and mental health. Additionally, there is a wealth of expertise in clinical trial management, chronic disease epidemiology, virus-host molecular interactions, genomics and machine learning for immunology.

Physical Sciences and Engineering
Programme Director: Dr Katy Tant
Engineering and the physical sciences have always been data-driven areas. However, with the rise of industry 4.0, combining data, physical and mathematical models has enabled much more realistic simulations and monitoring of complex systems.
Our expertise spans digital chemistry to social robotics and human-computer interaction, as well as significant world-leading research into energy control, forecasting and behaviour and environmental data analytics. Our researchers investigate AI for mobile and next generation communications, including privacy protection and facial recognition tools to safeguard our data.
Engineers work on a wide array of problems supported by AI including electronics design and application, computational mechanics, sensors and sensor networks, and critical infrastructure analysis. Our physicists use machine learning and AI to empower gravitational wave detection and other remotely-sensed solar physics phenomena, as well as next generation imaging techniques using quantum technology. Our expansive remit in this programme also includes investigating missing data, complex data fusion, the impact of climate change and spatial modelling of species distribution.

Arts & Humanities
Programme Director: Professor Sarah Cook
Our data science and AI activity in the Arts and Humanities investigates a wide range of topics, from the foundations of responsible and trustworthy AI to developing powerful tools such as virtual and augmented reality techniques, as well as employing data science and AI in digital humanities for natural language processing, large-scale data analytics for languages and to classify cultural heritages to deliver this. For example, in the creative arts, the role of AI in musical creativity and production links with other projects investigating music and social inclusion. We also support programmes looking at trust in AI and big data ethics, as well as digital forensics and making sense of collections.

Economic and Social Sciences
Programme Director: Professor Bridgette Wessels
Enabling a more inclusive and productive digital economy and making positive societal impacts that improve everyone's quality of life are at the heart of the Centre for Data Science and AI.
This programme brings together world-leading expertise to provide data-driven solutions that help tackle real world societal and economic problems in a range of disciplines. Bridging across disciplines, our researchers aim to develop a deeper understanding of human-technology relationships, development of the ethical principles required for responsible adoption of AI in the financial system and enabling monitoring of the economy in real-time to help policymakers with the goal of national prosperity. We also look at the regulation of data and AI, copyright law, and the standards and ethics that underpins it, both in a general sense and as applied to specific applications such as Fintech and digital currency.
There is also strong expertise looking at the role of data science and AI in public health, inclusive learning, digital literacy and inequalities, climate modelling and resource management, and urban analytics (including transport, active travel, mobility data and urban/regional planning).
If you are interested in speaking to someone about any of these activities, or related areas of interest, please contact our Programme Director directly, or alternatively get in touch via the Centre email address cdsai@glasgow.ac.uk
Science of Data Science and AI
The foundational AI models that can be applied in different context and adjusted for different applications are the engine of our research and innovation. We have extensive expertise in information retrieval, distributed computing and data systems, networked systems management and resilience, and multiscale modelling – with data science and AI providing the foundation for these and many others. They provide fast and accurate approximations of numerically intensive physical processes, develop recommender systems, and advance new ways for clustering and classification.
Additionally, in line with our sustainability goals, our researchers are developing computationally efficient modelling methodology to deliver more sustainable computing resources.

Impact and Innovation
Impact and Innovation are at the heart of the Centre for Data Science and AI. We develop inclusive and responsible AI not just for the sake of research but also to make a positive societal, environmental, economic, and cultural impacts.
We work with our colleagues in the Innovation, Engagement and Economic Development team, as well as Impact Managers across our Colleges, to support impact and innovation in Data Science and AI across the University.
