The University of Glasgow has been announced as a founding member of a new network of higher education institutions which will work to use data science and AI for social good.

The Turing University Network was developed by The Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, to find new ways to work with universities across the UK.

Building upon the Turing Network Development Awards, The University of Glasgow is among the 36 universities of the Turing University Network to support the Turing and the community of the Turing and to maximise the collaborations and impacts.

Through the Turing University Network, the Institute will build a structured and inclusive university network representative of the wider data science and AI community in the UK which will facilitate better connections across the data science/AI landscape.

Professor Chris Pearce, Vice Principal for Research & Knowledge Exchange, said: "The University of Glasgow is delighted to join the new Turing University Network. The Alan Turing Institute plays a leading role in the Data Science and AI ecosystem, both nationally and internationally. Closer collaboration with the Turing, via this new and inclusive engagement model, will help us to accelerate our research related to data science and AI, and its impact."

Professor Ana Basiri, of the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences, is the University of Glasgow’s Academic Turing liaison. Professor Basiri said: "Joining the Turing University Network will enable us to develop better connections across the data science and AI landscape and we look forward to the many benefits, including access to both Turing and the vibrant, wider community which will ultimately accelerate our research and impact.

“Our University recognises the importance of Data Science and AI and delivers world-leading, impactful research and innovation in this area. Joining this network, coordinated by the Turing, enables us to align our strategy for AI and have more effective collaboration with other institutions to respond better to a fast-changing landscape of AI research and innovation."

Donna Brown, Director of Academic Engagement at The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re delighted to launch a new UK-wide university network of data science and AI expertise via the Turing University Network. The network is crucial to successful delivery of the Institute Strategy, enables our role as a national convenor in the data science and AI landscape, and creates the opportunity for meaningful collaboration where interests align across research and innovation, skills, and engagement.”
