About Democratizing History

“Democratizing History in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings” is a one-day workshop taking place at the Scottish Oral History Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland on 11 September 2015. Building upon conversation initiated at the 2014 International Oral History Association meeting, workshop participants will examine the particular ethical, methodological and theoretical challenges associated with oral historians’ and related practitioners’ efforts to democratize history in conflict and post-conflict settings in Central and Eastern Europe. It has three key objectives:

  1. To establish an international network of leading scholars experienced in working amid conflict and post-conflict settings
  2. To bring these practitioners to Glasgow to promote dialogue among interested members of the public and Glasgow-based academics and their students
  3. To create a multimedia website and edited volume that can serve as points of reference for students, academics, professionals, and members of the public who are interested in applying oral historical practices to their investigation of conflict and post-conflict communities.
