Focusing on the 18th and 19th centuries, this two-day workshop held in St Petersburg will explore environmental factors in contemporary Russian history, Eurasian connections, soil, water and forest resources in 19th century Russia, conceptualising nature and natural resources in the 18th century and the treatment of resources in critical times.

Individual speakers will cover a broad range of topics, including Soviet geographers and the Stalin Plan for the Transformation of Nature, the industrial production of oil-shales in Eastern Estonia during WWI and conceptualising fish resources during WWI and in early Soviet times: from local users to the state.
