About Us
This UK Research & Innovation funded project aims to address dietary inequalities and poor health in low-income areas of Glasgow. Led by Dr. Ada Garcia, the three-year partnership will work with researchers, local government, and food organisations to understand the complex factors influencing food choices in these communities. The project will establish weekly community run food markets taking place on Saturdays offering affordable and culturally appropriate produce, dietary advice, and cooking tips. The goal is to improve food access and address social justice issues related to food systems, with a final evaluation to determine if the model can be replicated elsewhere.Glasgow City has high instances of deprivation, with 29% of the city’s population in the 10% most deprived areas in Scotland. In addition to this, the cost-of-living crisis directly contributes to diet inequalities. In 2023, 93% of Scottish households were concerned with food prices, with 29% saying they cannot afford a healthy balanced diet and 22% unable to afford essential food shopping.
We will work together with existing commnity initiatives to co-produce community-led markets in Govan and Cranhill. These markets will be designed with the consideration of local, social and cultural aspects to promote equity and sustainable dietary change.
