Adam Smith Observatory of Corporate Reporting Practices

The EUFIN Workshop is a well-established and recognised international accounting event with an emphasis on corporate reporting. Previous locations include: Paris/France, Lund/Sweden, Catania/Italy, Bamberg/Germany, Prague/Czech Republic, Florence/Italy, Vienna/Austria. The annual two-day Workshop, first organised in 2005, forms the cornerstone activity of the informal network of researchers into financial reporting. The network supports and encourages practice-related research into financial (and wider corporate) reporting. The standing and reputation of the Workshop is further demonstrated by its ongoing support by the European Accounting Association’s journal Accounting in Europe.

The aim of the Workshop in general is to provide specialist inputs of a type that are not available at regular academic conferences. Past speakers include CFOs, auditors, regulators and standard-setters. Researchers present papers that are in process of development and obtain informed feedback from experienced colleagues in a collegiate environment. High quality papers accepted for the workshop may be submitted to Accounting in Europe for a fast-track review.

EUFIN 2021

This year the two-day workshop was virtually hosted by the University of Glasgow. It comprised three plenary sessions on recent developments on corporate reporting in Europe and more globally and two streams of parallel sessions for presentation of 24 academic papers (most of them with a discussant).

There were 130 registrations for the event and delegates attended from across Europe and Australia. ICAEW Charitable Trusts and ACCA kindly supported the event financially.

The focus of the first plenary session (chaired by Prof Carol Adams, Durham University) was on “Non-financial reporting standards and frameworks”. The keynote speakers were Jens Poll (Accountancy Europe) and Mark O’Sullivan (PWC, UK). The focus of the second plenary session (chaired by Lynn Bradley, University of Glasgow) was on “Accounting and Auditing regulatory developments in the UK”. The keynote speakers were Annette Davis (UK Endorsement Board) and James Barbour (ICAS). The presentations in the third plenary session concentrated around “The IASB Agenda Consultation” and the keynote speakers were Ann Tarca (IASB) and Jens Berger (Deloitte, Germany & EFRAG). The session was chaired by Richard Martin (ACCA).

Finally, it is right to recognise the excellent support provided by Trang Nguyen, Minmin Du, Anfaal Ahmad and Evangelos Seretis and the ASBS Events team ensuring the Workshop ran so smoothly – certainly well appreciated by all those who attended.
