Our mission and vision

The ARC is a dynamic, enabling space for collaborative, interdisciplinary research. We create the conditions for bold, innovative inquiry that breaks boundaries and drives real-world impact.

1. Building a dynamic environment

Through shared spaces, state-of-the-art facilities and an open, inclusive culture, we create the conditions for interaction, experimentation and for new ideas to emerge and evolve.

Examples in action: Our Makerspace provides the tools to transform ideas into practical products and solutions. Our new podcast studio is on the way, opening fresh possibilities for communication, teaching and research. Our Creative Digital Lab is in a testing phase and will enable practice-oriented research and digital prototyping.

2. Connecting people and ideas

We bring together academics, entrepreneurs, technologists, artists, civic partners and the public to explore questions no single field can tackle alone. Through inviting diverse perspectives and curating dynamic connections, we unlock collective potential.

Examples in action: Our flagship ARC Conversations series creates space to rethink how research happens and how it can influence the world. Our ARChitects, an interdisciplinary group of ARC residents and UofG researchers, help shape the ARC’s culture and ambitions and help develop emerging ideas and opportunities for the community.

3. Transforming how research happens

We champion research that requires creativity and risk. By fuelling bold ideas, encouraging innovative approaches and integrating emerging technologies, we open new possibilities for how research is done and catalyse Glasgow’s emerging and established strengths.

Examples in action: The 'Towards the University of the Future' research project is exploring how universities can better support collaborative, experimental and interdisciplinary work - with the ARC as a key experimental site. We're home to the DiveIn Centre for Doctoral Training, bringing together diverse teams to tackle transformative interdisciplinary research and mission-driven challenges, creating an inclusive space that pushes the frontiers of knowledge.   

Research Strategy 2036

The ARC is an engine for Glasgow's cross-disciplinary, future-shaping research and a core driver of the University's Research Strategy 2036:

  • Embedding interdisciplinarity in everyday research practice
  • Accelerating impact through co-located collaboration and translation of research
    Catalysing emerging and existing research strengths, helping them expand and flourish
  • Curating bold, creative environments where new ideas can emerge
  • Providing core infrastructure and developing advanced technologies that enable future-ready research
  • Strengthening civic and global partnerships through co‑creation and engagement
