Growing Your Career

To ensure optimal career development, students will gain technical, generic and societal understanding, and can take advantage of opportunities we offer for international training and laboratory visits, networking with industry and teaching assistance.

Together, these activities will enable our students to develop into individuals with the full range of skills and insight required to pursue their career goals.

The thesis committee will work with each student to define a personalised training programme relevant to their needs and plans.

International internships

Students who interact with our international partners (European and African) will access expertise in field based, applied infection biology (MLW/COM, KEMRI, UVRI), and/or opportunities for development of cutting-edge approaches including optics and imaging (LMU).

Some students may spend considerable time with international co-supervisors, all of whom have established links with Glasgow.

Shorter visits with collaborators are also envisaged, e.g. to learn specific techniques, access specialized equipment, or be involved in sample collection, processing and analysis on site.

Visiting students will contribute to their host institutes e.g. via seminars, teaching assistance and public engagement.

These valuable opportunities provide a broader student experience and help students mature into resourceful individuals.

Industrial placements

Our strong links to pharmaceutical companies enable interested students to arrange research visits during their PhD or PhD-Plus year.

A key example is the AstraZeneca-funded GLAZgo Discovery Centre in the Wellcome Centre building at Glasgow.

Such relationships can help develop confident scientists conversant in the skills and objectives of industry.

AfrIBoP courses

Students will be encouraged to attend one of our Africa-based ‘AfrIBoP’ courses to build international connections.

Courses include workshops in bioinformatics and flow cytometry, on which students may act as tutors providing experience of, and training in teaching.
