What are the benefits for the host
Placements are 3 months in duration. This is to ensure that the placement provides adequate experience outside the research project environment for the student and enables you, as the employer, to achieve a substantial project or piece of work. PIPS are usually undertaken by students towards the end of Year 2 or the beginning of Year 3 during their 4-year PhD project, in order to minimise the interruption to their research.
The placement may be taken either in one 3-month block, or in a number of shorter blocks or even part-time over a longer period of time. This will depend on the preferences of the student and host organisation, as well as the type of placement.
We would not expect there to be significant preparation work prior to the internship starting. During the placement, it is not expected that the student would work longer than normal full-time equivalent hours.
