Summary:
Multimorbidity is common in chronic kidney disease but relatively unexplored in relation to kidney transplantation. Since kidney transplantation has the potential to improve some health outcomes but also increase risk of other long-term health conditions, the relationship between multimorbidity and kidney transplantation is dynamic. Conventional tools to assess multimorbidity may not be well-suited to such dynamics.
The project will use national renal datasets and linked routine healthcare data to assess multimorbidity before and after kidney transplantation using different metrics and to identify areas for improved care of transplant recipients living with multiple long-term conditions through qualitative research.
The project also has the potential to extend to other organ transplant settings. Novel exploration of multimorbidity dynamics could also be applied to other events and contribute to advancing the field of multimorbidity research generally.
The successful applicant will gain expertise in epidemiology, data analysis and mixed-methods research under the supervision and mentorship of experts in the Schools of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health; Health and Wellbeing; and international collaborators.
