MOTION-D: Tracking multimorbidity in real-world diabetes using wearable data
Supervisors:
Dr Scott Cunningham, School of Medicine (University of Dundee)
Prof Graham Rena, School of Medicine (University of Dundee)
Prof Ewan Pearson, School of Medicine (University of Dundee)
Dr Chris Lim, Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art (University of Dundee)
Summary:
MOTION-D is an interdisciplinary PhD project at the interfaces of clinical research, wearable technology, and data science. MOTION-D will investigate how everyday behaviours, captured through activity monitors, associate with or even predict multimorbidity in people with diabetes.
MOTION-D will utilise My Diabetes My Way (MDMW), Scotland’s national diabetes platform, which uniquely links wearable data, glucose data, and NHS electronic health records. It will access a pioneering cohort of nearly 2,000 individuals who have linked their wearables to MDMW, offering an unparalleled opportunity to analyse real-world digital health data.
The student will receive full training, supported by a supervisory team with expertise in diabetes, data science, digital health and patient-centred design. MOTION-D will thus suit a highly motivated and ambitious candidate interested in personalised medicine, chronic disease management, and health technology, all of which are significant growth areas in Medicine.
The student will be based in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee’s thriving main teaching hospital and will also benefit from access to the Health Informatics Centre’s secure Safe Haven for data analysis. Public engagement and co-design are integral parts of MOTION-D, and engagement with these aspects will be expected to enhance the candidate’s career development.
