Research title: Beliefs on EIL from the perspective of Indonesian Muslim pre-service teachers

Research Summary

My interest in the globalization of English developed during my master’s degree, where I took a course on English Pronunciation and Prosody. For the final assignment, I analysed problematic pronunciation features of recorded English language learners and proposed suitable teaching techniques. This learning experience introduced me to the concept of World Englishes, English as Lingua Franca, English as an International Language, and Global Englishes.

This exposure also led me to reflect on my experiences as a language learner. I began with the knowledge of British and American English, which I encountered through media such as television series, films, and music. At that time, I believed these two varieties were legitimate forms of the English language. However, my experience of living and studying overseas provided me with a deeper insight into the diversity of the English language and how it reflects the reality of English language speakers today.

As the English language curriculum in Indonesia is now transitioning towards an inclusive and multilingual approach, my research aims to understand teachers' beliefs and practices regarding English as an International Language (EIL). By centering on the teachers' lived experiences in learning and teaching English, this study seek to illuminate how Indonesian senior high school teachers develop and reconcile their pedagogical beliefs with the demands of globalized, pluralistic understanding of English.

Teaching

I am a former English language teacher with experience in both formal and informal education settings. Before coming to the University of Glasgow, I worked as an academic staff in the English Language Education Study Program at a public university in my home country, Indonesia. I taught courses such as General English, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Functional Grammar, and Advanced Speaking.
