Research title: Incorporating qualitative evidence in economic evaluation.
Research summary
Qualitative research focuses on identifying the meanings people attach to their experiences; the relationship between knowledge, experience, and action; and the social factors that shape these processes. Recent developments in health technology assessment (HTA) have highlighted the need to go beyond clinical and cost-effectiveness, to fully understand the potential value of health technologies; and qualitative research in a set of methods with great potential for generating patient-focused evidence relevant to HTA. More than 20 years ago, a call to action was issued to expand the use of qualitative methods to inform HTA and yet, their use remains infrequent.
In my PhD research we will use qualitative research techniques to illustrate where these methods can illuminate issues in HTA, that cannot be addressed using quantitative methods alone. The output of this research will ideally highlight the potential value of qualitative methods for informing HTA; and encourage HTA researchers to use either qualitative or quantitative methods depending on the research question at hand.
