Research title: Research Title: Addressing Neglected Needs and Exploring New Opportunities in Vocational Education in Indonesia

Research Summary

My PhD research explores the aspirations and post-school transitions of vocational (SMK) graduates in rural Indonesia. Drawing on Critical Realism, Bourdieu’s theory of practice, and the Capability Approach, the study examines how socio-economic structures shape young people’s agency, opportunities, and future imaginaries.
Using participatory qualitative methods, particularly photovoice, the research foregrounds the lived experiences of marginalised rural youth and their navigation of local labour markets, contributing to more context-sensitive and equitable approaches to vocational education and rural development.
