Research title: Mosquito environment feature description and modelling using Earth Observation data for the development of surveillance systems

Research summary

My research addresses the critical need to investigate the dynamics of malaria vectors in the context of land use and land cover change along forest fringes in two geographically distinct yet ecologically sensitive locations: the Malaysian Borneo and the Peruvian Amazon. Despite efforts in malaria control, these regions continue to grapple with persistent challenges in low transmission settings, emphasizing the urgency of innovative approaches to enhance vector surveillance and control strategies. My study leverages the capabilities of remote sensing technology, specifically freely available Synthetic aperture radar data and drone imagery to address both large and fine scale land cover change. Additionally, I will use surveys to gather information on the current needs of integrating remote sensing data into malaria vectors surveillance and control strategies and use that information to develop a software package to manage and process drone imagery to be used by local stakeholders in Malaysia and Peru.

[15/11/2020]   Young Investigators Award

Awarding institution: American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

I won the Young Investigator Award at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) 2020 annual meeting in the Entomology and Vector Biology module. I presented the work titled "Spatial distribution and dispersion of malaria vectors across local micro-habitats in the Peruvian Amazon", this project involves the use of landscape stratification to investigate precisely where outside houses, malaria transmission occurs in Amazonian landscapes.

[23/05/2022]   Living Planet Symposium EC Student grant

Awarding institution: European Space Agency (ESA) – Copernicus Space Office

I was awarded a student grant at the ESA LPS22 conference that took place in Bonn, Germany during May 23 – May 27, 2022.
