Research title: Fr Edward Douglas CSsR 1819 - 1898

Research Summary

My research is on the Life of Fr Edward Douglas CSsR. Born in Glasgow in 1819, he died in Rome in 1898.

Douglas was an important benefactor to the Roman Catholic Religious order, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), funding the building of St Alphonsus, the mother house of the congregation in the Via Merulana, Rome, as well as Kinnoull monastery, Perth, Scotland, and St Mary’s church and monastery in Clapham, London. He also provided a link between the world of popular Catholicism and the Oxford Movement, the high-church revival in the Church of England; and in his later years between the Catholic Church in (and of) Rome and the burgeoning Church in England.
