The election of Professor Carter based in UofG's School of Humanities | Sgoil nan Daonnachdan follows a rigorous, peer‑reviewed process involving both the relevant Academic Section and Class Committee of the Academy.

Founded in 1988, Academia Europaea is widely regarded as Europe’s foremost academy for science, humanities and letters. Its membership now includes around 6,000 eminent scholars and scientists from across the world, spanning the full breadth of academic disciplines. Members contribute to a wide range of high‑level initiatives, including scholarly workshops and conferences, the publication of the European Review, and the provision of expert, interdisciplinary science advice to the European Commission through the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium.

Professor Carter’s election recognises his international reputation for research excellence in contemporary epistemology, social epistemology and applied philosophy.

Professor Carter said: “I am deeply honoured to join the Academia Europaea and to have my work recognised in this way. The Cogito Epistemology Research Centre at Glasgow has a longstanding European orientation and I look forward to contributing to this wider community of scholars. I am grateful to my colleagues within the College of Arts & Humanities for their continuing support and for the collaborative environment that makes this kind of recognition possible.”

As a newly elected member, Professor Carter has been invited to meet fellow scholars and present his research at the Academy’s 2026 annual conference in Budapest, taking place from 12–16 October. Upon completion of the formal acceptance procedure, he will be entitled to use the post‑nominal designation MAE (Member of the Academia Europaea).
