The University of Glasgow hosts its fourth science festival this year with another varied selection of free events for everyone, culminating in a family fun day on Sunday June 13.

From 20 May until 14 June a variety of talks, workshops and other events, including a schools programme, will take place at the University and other locations around the city, including the Botanic Gardens, Pearce Institute and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The festival is aimed at anyone who wonders how the world works, what we know about it and what remains to be discovered, as well as hoping to inspire the next generation of scientists. The majority of the events are free and open to everyone.

Highlights of the festival include a series of public lectures on topics ranging from marine biodiversity to quantum mechanics; workshops on paper-making, wine-making and bread-baking; films which examine climate change and food production, as well as a variety of hands-on activities such as the Govan Science Shuffle where children can build things out of cardboard and try their hand at weaving, metalwork and carving.

The schools programme includes the junior Café Scientifique, where pupils will discuss contemporary scientific issues with a university researcher, science workshops, and the Children & Young Peoples’ Book Festival.

Deborah McNeill, Manager of University of Glasgow Science Festival, said: “The University of Glasgow Science Festival aims to show the human face of science and scientists in a welcoming environment for all the family – mums, dads, children, young people, grans and grandpas. We have lots of events and almost all of them are free so come along and prepare to be amazed!”
