Professor Stuart Reid, Dean of Veterinary Medicine, has received an award in recognition of his scientific contributions to animal health.

He was presented with the Petplan Charitable Trust Scientific Award 2010 for his outstanding contribution to companion animal veterinary science at a ceremony in Birmingham Town Hall on April 8.

This is an annual competitive award and individuals are nominated by a member of the Scientific Committee of the Petplan Charitable Trust. The nominations are then assessed by the Scientific Committee, with outside assessors as necessary, and a recommendation made.

Prof Reid has over 130 publications, a career research portfolio of over £20 million, is Chair of the Donkey Sanctuary Trustees and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Prof Reid said: “It is an honour to receive this award.  Our work is committed to improving the health and welfare of animals, as well as advancing our understanding of disease.  I am delighted that the impact of our science has been recognised by the Petplan Charitable Trust.”

Since its inception in 1994, the Trust has awarded more than £5 million to more than 100 animal welfare organisations both in the UK and overseas. The Trust relies on the generosity of Petplan policy holders who, via small individual donations, collectively donate more than £400,000 annually to enable the Trust to continue its work.
