The Hunterian Museum - which has reopened after refurbishment - was first established 200 years ago, and today is rated as one of the top five museums in Scotland because of the scale, range and significance of its collections.

The Hunterian opened its doors in 1807, making it Scotland's oldest public museum and giving it a unique place within Scotland's cultural heritage. The Hunterian is the legacy of Dr William Hunter, a pioneering obstetrician and teacher with a passion for collecting. Born locally, and a student at the University of Glasgow, Hunter found fame and fortune in London as physician to Queen Charlotte and as a teacher of anatomy. He lavished his wealth on building up the vast private collection which he bequeathed to the University in 1873, along with money to create a suitable museum.

Ewen Smith, Director of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, said:

"2007 is a very special year for the Hunterian ﾖ as Scotland's oldest public museum we celebrate our bicentenary and have put together a programme which has something for everyone. We look forward to welcoming old and new friends alike when we reopen on 23 May ﾖ our founder William Hunter's birthday."

The Museum has been extensively refurbished and redisplayed in preparation for the bicentenary celebrations. Alongside some old favourites, objects have been introduced which have never been on public view before. 'Weird and Wonderful' features extraordinary items from the collection which are either unusual in themselves or have unique personal stories. Also new is a display dedicated entirely to our founder, Dr William Hunter.

In summer 2007, a special exhibition in the Art Gallery, "My Highest Pleasures", will showcase Hunter's art collection. As well as the new displays and exhibitions, a lively events programme features a special launch event, family days, film, music, demonstrations, talks and lectures.
