Award for Professor Anna Dominiczak

Professor Anna Dominiczak has been honoured by the Lord Provost of Glasgow.

She was given the Lord Provost's Special Award 2006 for her contribution and commitment to the health of the city.

The announcement was made at a ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers.

Professor Dominiczak said: 'I was deeply honoured to be given this award. It is wonderful to be recognised by the people of Glasgow in this way and I am extremely proud.

'I have been in Glasgow for nearly 25 years and I am firmly committed to improving the health of the city. I consider myself now to be both a Scot and a Glaswegian.

'This honour is also for the fantastic team we have here at the BHF centre. Without them we would not be making the progress we are. To work with such talented people is a joy.'

Glasgow University Principal, Sir Muir Russell said: 'I congratulate Anna on her latest award. The University is lucky to have a scientist of her stature working here.

'This recognition goes to show that appreciation of her and her team's efforts goes far beyond our University.'

Professor Dominiczak was nominated for her work in the battle to rid Scotland of its title of heart disease capital of Europe.

She graduated in Medicine at the Medical School of Gdansk, Poland in 1978.

Professor Dominiczak is head of the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Glasgow. She also holds a BHF Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine

Last year, she was named Evening Times Scotswoman of the year.
