The European Commission's President, Jose Manuel Barroso is set to visit, for the first time, the European University Association (EUA) convention held at the University of Glasgow on 2nd April 2005.

Barroso's presence underlines the importance the Commission attaches at the highest level to universities and to their contribution to building Europe in a number of key policy areas.

Participants are set to debate some of Barroso's most recent proposals, such as the creation of a European Institute of Technology, the future of funding for Higher Education and student fees, and forthcoming new education and training programmes.

The planned new research institute is to be based on America's world class MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) that aims to advance knowledge and educate students in science and technology. The establishment of a European Institute of Technology would enable Europe to attract the best brains and companies from around the world and to boost scientific excellence.

The proposals stem from the Commission's aim to boost knowledge and innovation though high technology, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), universities and businesses.

Jose Manuel Barroso is also set to debate how research and higher education can open up business opportunities for Scotland, and how education and research can develop a modern, dynamic and sustainable economy.

Over 600 Higher Education leaders from across Europe are participating in the 3-day EUA event.

Hosted by the universities of Strathclyde, the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University the EUA event ensures that universities make their voice heard in debates that are critical for the future of Europe.
