Major programme of exhibitions and events at the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Art Gallery opens to the public on Saturday 21 June 2003

This year the University of Glasgow is celebrating the centenary of James McNeill Whistler with a major programme of exhibitions and events at its Hunterian Art Gallery, sponsored by Lloyds TSB Scotland.

In an exceptional gesture, 'Whistler's Mother', undoubtedly his most famous work, has been loaned by the Musee d'Orsay to mark the centenary event. With over 200 works on view across five temporary exhibitions, this will be the world's largest public display of his art.

Professor Sir Graeme Davies, Principal of the University of Glasgow, commented, 'The University's Whistler Collection is one of Glasgow's greatest cultural treasures. I hope this exciting programme will make Whistler and Glasgow as familiar as Mackintosh and Glasgow.'

Susan Rice, Chief Executive, Lloyds TSB Scotland, added, ' Whistler had strong connections with Scotland and in particular with Glasgow and his work was much admired by Scottish artists of the time. I really hope that visitors to the Hunterian will enjoy the rich programme of exhibitions, events and special activities that run to the end of the year.'

The exhibitions open to the public on Saturday 21 June at the University's Hunterian Art Gallery.

Admission is free.

Opening hours have been extended to include Sundays from 12.30pm ヨ 4.30pm from 21 June ヨ 4 October.
