Emotional Intelligence - a different way of being smart

Published: 19 June 2003

Major conference on 21 June 2003 in the Bute Hall, University of Glasgow

For the first time ever in Scotland, American author and psychologist, Dr. Daniel Goleman, will offer the keynote address at a conference for education and health workers. The conference is organised by the Scottish Network for Able Pupils in partnership with the Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit, and with the support of Learning and Teaching Scotland, NHS Health Scotland, the Scottish Executive Education Department and the Scottish Executive's National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Well-being.

Goleman has described the concept of emotional intelligence as a master aptitude that profoundly affects all our other abilities and ultimately how well we do in life. The aims of the conference are to:

promote the concept of emotional intelligence.

consider why it is important to learning and teaching.

reflect on its role in the health promoting school.

suggest some ways in which it might be implemented.

Given that studies are beginning to indicate that emotional intelligence is more closely linked to lifelong success than is IQ, the conference is expected to stimulate significant debate.

Chris Smith, speaking on behalf of the organisers (the Scottish Network for Able Pupils and the Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit), explained, 'Schools have traditionally concentrated on promoting students' cognitive skills and these, of course, remain important but recent research into how we learn is making it clear that it is equally important to develop the emotional skills of students. By inviting Dr Goleman to speak at the conference we hope that these issues will be widely discussed by educational practitioners in Scotland.
