Glasgow Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight

Glasgow University Air Squadron fly over marks anniversary and launch of new book

Glasgow Airport is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight on Wednesday 17 December 2003 at 10.35 am when the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Elizabeth Cameron will unveil a plaque to one of Scotland's most famous aviation pioneers, Percy Sinclair Pilcher.

The ceremony will take place in the airport VIP lounge which is being renamed "The Pilcher Suite " and a book entitled"From Pilcher to the Planets" written by Dugald Cameron, Roderick Galbraith and Douglas Thomson from the University of Glasgow detailing aspects of Scotland's aviation history and contribution to flying will be launched .

At approximately 11.30 am members of Glasgow University Air Squadron will take off to fly over Pilcher's flying fields at Cardross.

The unveiling ceremony is timed to coincide with the date and time one hundred years ago when the Wright brothers made their epic voyage.
